Holiday Spotlight on Pop Art Gallery, Custom Framing, Vintage Images, and A Grateful Dead Store at 433 Main Street

We're pleased to include Pop Art Gallery in our Holiday Spotlight Series.

We're spotlighting many of the unique businesses that make up Downtown Placerville so that you can learn of the opportunities you have to shop locally and support local businesses, their families, and ultimately our community.

We connected with them to learn more about Pop Art Gallery at 433 Main Street.

How would you describe your business to a friend?

We’re a custom picture framing company and we also have all kinds of art.

We have a stunning collection of vintage images from our local area, a large selection of Rock & Roll concert posters, and within our gallery we have a super cool Grateful Dead store!

What is the biggest compliment your business has received?

Can’t say just one. Every compliment from every person is the biggest compliment.

Why did you start your business?

We didn’t start our business for any particular reason. It wasn’t thought out or planned in any way. We just followed our hearts and took one small step at a time.

We didn’t have money, just a raw entrepreneurial spirit.

We started in retail selling t-shirts at the beach on the Oregon Coast. First 12 t-shirts, then we bought 24, then 48, then 96, then 192, and so on, we slowly created our business to what we are today.

What do you love most about it?

We love Custom Framing (our primary service) and our favorite thing about our business is serving our amazing community with our expert services.

There is nothing like taking in someone’s precious belongings and creating art.

What is something you wish people knew about your business?

We have been in business for over 25 years, with 10 of those years being on Main Street in Placerville.  It's a real Mom & Pop business, just us, Dan and Angie.

What is a common question you get or what is your most popular product or service?

Because we have a large selection of prints available from our local area (many of them came from families that migrated to town during the Gold Rush) we get a lot of local history questions.

The Rock & Roll collection generates a lot of questions, too. People always want to tell us their rock & toll story.

The most popular of all is our Custom Framing services. We have a lot of experience making it easy for our customers and have an outstanding selection of customized molding for every discerning taste and style imaginable.

Why did you choose to be on Main Street in Placerville?

One thing we’ve always known is Location, Location, Location. Our current location is our 7th store. Part of our success in business is always being located in an area that you have people walking by your door.

When we started in Old Hangtown 10 years ago about 1/3 of the buildings were empty.

To be a part of the bustling Placerville Downtown business district today is awesome!

Do you have any upcoming events or specials or new products/services people should know about?

Our Grateful Dead store inside our gallery is getting known to have a better selection than stores in San Francisco.

Selling the Grateful Dead merchandise is a bit of a throw back for us too. We started our career selling band merch and we still have a lot of those great connections. It’s also been super fun.
